Remote Web Development Agency for UK Businesses

By Obaid Tariq, Founder & Lead Engineer · Last updated

AI Dev Planner is a web development agency that builds custom web applications, SaaS platforms and business software for UK startups and growing businesses. Our engineering team is based in Islamabad, Pakistan, and works with UK clients remotely; we do not have a UK office. If you are comparing web development agencies before you hire, this page sets out what we build, how a remote project runs from the UK, our published GBP price bands, what you own at the end, and how to compare us fairly against anyone else on your shortlist.

The short version

  • We build web applications, SaaS, MVPs, portals, internal tools and AI features on Next.js, TypeScript and PostgreSQL.
  • Published UK planning ranges start at £25,000–£45,000 (GBP) for a SaaS or web app MVP.
  • Published timelines: 8–12 weeks for a focused SaaS MVP, 12–16 weeks for a web application MVP.
  • You own the code, repository and deployment setup, and get a 60–90 day warranty after launch.
  • Our team is in Islamabad, Pakistan (4–5 hours ahead of the UK) and works remotely with UK clients through Slack and bi-weekly video walkthroughs. There is no UK office.

What a web development agency does

A web development agency (or web development company; buyers use both terms) plans, designs, builds, tests, launches and maintains things that run in a browser. That covers two quite different kinds of project, and the first job of a good agency is to tell you which one you have.

We focus on the right-hand column. For a content-led marketing site, in our view a website builder or WordPress is often the better choice, and we will say so. Our comparison of WordPress vs Next.js explains where each one fits.

What we build

Our standard stack is Next.js with the App Router, TypeScript, PostgreSQL through Supabase with Prisma, Redis for caching and queues, Tailwind CSS and Vercel hosting, with Stripe for payments. A consistent stack shortens delivery and makes handover easier, but we adapt hosting to your requirements, for example a specific cloud provider or a UK, EU or US data region. Each service below has its own detail page.

E-commerce web development

For e-commerce we build custom and headless: catalogue and transaction APIs that handle bursts of orders without slowing the storefront, behind a fast Next.js front end, with payments through Stripe. That suits shops with unusual pricing or ordering rules, B2B catalogues with customer-specific prices, and stores that must sync with an ERP, warehouse or accounting system.

For a standard shop with a normal catalogue, a hosted e-commerce platform is usually cheaper to build and run, and we will tell you so. If you sell into the EU as well as the UK, plan VAT display, currencies and languages early; our web development agency for Europe page covers those requirements.

Need software beyond the browser, such as mobile apps or back-end systems? See our software development agency page, or the custom web development service page for the technical detail behind our web builds.

Working with a remote web development agency from the UK

We work with UK startups building a first product, SaaS companies adding features or AI modules, established businesses replacing spreadsheets and legacy software, and in-house product teams that need extra senior capacity. AI Dev Planner is led by founder and lead engineer Obaid Tariq, who works directly with every client from discovery to production. Here is how the remote model works in practice.

Time zones and meetings

Islamabad is four hours ahead of the UK in summer and five hours ahead in winter, because Pakistan does not change its clocks. Our working day overlaps with UK mornings and early afternoons, so stand-ups, planning and reviews sit in that window, and meeting times are agreed at kickoff. Work outside the overlap carries on in writing, so you can review it in your own day.

Communication and project management

Each project gets a dedicated Slack channel with direct access to the engineers building your product, not an account manager in between. Every two weeks you get a video walkthrough of working software on a staging environment, so you see progress rather than status reports.

Contracts, pricing and intellectual property

Prices are quoted in GBP after a scoping conversation, with fixed two-week sprint costs against a written scope. Code ownership transfers to your business once the final invoice is settled. Under UK law, paying for commissioned work does not by itself make you the copyright owner, so with any agency make sure the assignment is written into the contract (see sources below).

Data handling and UK GDPR

Hosting can sit in a UK or EU region, in cloud accounts your business controls, and development normally runs on test data. If anyone outside the UK, including our team, needs access to personal data, you will need a written controller-processor contract and should check the ICO guidance on international transfers. We do not claim a compliance certification; what is agreed for your project is set out in writing before the build. Our offshore software development guide for UK businesses has the full UK GDPR checklist and a comparison with UK-based agencies and freelancers.

When a remote agency is not the right fit

We are probably not the right partner if you need a supplier on site in the UK regularly, if your contracts, insurer or regulator require that only UK-based staff can access your systems or data, or if you need a fixed quote before anyone has looked at the scope.

For how the same model works for clients elsewhere, see how working with our Islamabad team works. Web projects often lead into a SaaS product build or a Next.js migration; to talk through yours, book a free scoping call.

How a project runs

Every project follows the same five steps. The aim is that you always know what has been agreed, what has been built and what comes next.

  1. 01

    Discovery and written scope

We map your workflows, data model, authentication and integrations, then turn them into a written scope with an estimate and a list of exclusions. Changes later are measured against this document.

  2. 02

    Two-week sprints on staging

We build in fixed two-week sprints and deploy to a staging environment you can click through. Every two weeks you get a video walkthrough of the working software, not a status slide.

  3. 03

    Testing before launch

Automated tests and load tests check how the application behaves under expected and peak traffic before it goes live.

  4. 04

    Launch, handover and warranty

You receive setup and deployment documentation, environment configuration and a walkthrough. A 60–90 day warranty after launch covers defects in what we delivered.

  5. 05

    Optional ongoing support

A maintenance retainer is scoped separately and can cover monitoring, security patches, dependency upgrades and performance work. You can equally support the product in-house.

Published price bands and timelines

There is no honest fixed price for a web application before it has been scoped, but there are honest planning ranges, and we publish ours. After discovery you get a written estimate with fixed two-week sprint costs against the agreed scope and the exclusions listed.

AI Dev Planner published planning ranges in GBP by product type
Product typePlanning range (GBP)Timeline
SaaS or web app MVP£25,000–£45,0008–12 weeks for a focused SaaS MVP; 12–16 weeks for a standard operational web-app MVP
Internal tools£40,000–£80,000+Agreed after discovery
Customer portals£60,000–£120,000+Agreed after discovery

Ranges from our UK custom web application cost guide. A “+” means the figure can be exceeded. Hosting, third-party licences and maintenance are separate.

We do not publish a fixed price for brochure websites, because the scope varies too much. For market prices across builders, freelancers and agencies, see how much a website costs; for an indicative range for your own product, use the free MVP cost calculator; and for running costs after launch, see website maintenance cost.

What you own at the end

Once the final invoice is settled, full ownership of the source code, repository, environment configuration and deployment setup transfers to you, with no licensing lock-in. The exact wording is in each project’s contract and our terms of service, so ask for it before you sign.

  • We recommend the repository lives in your own GitHub or GitLab organisation from day one, so you see every commit.
  • Hosting, domains and third-party services sit in accounts your company controls, so you see those bills directly.
  • Open-source components stay under their own licences, and we list them.
  • Handover includes setup and deployment documentation, environment configuration and a walkthrough.

If you are leaving another supplier and need your code and accounts back first, our guide to switching web development agencies covers the steps.

How to compare web development agencies

Whoever you hire, put the same questions to every company on your shortlist, in writing, and compare the answers side by side. In our view these seven separate a good partner from a risky one:

  1. Do they tell you plainly whether you need a website or a web application, and recommend a builder or WordPress when that fits better?
  2. Is there a written discovery output (scope, data model, integrations, exclusions) before a fixed price?
  3. Will the code be assigned to you in writing, and will the repository, domain, hosting and accounts sit in your company's name?
  4. Do you know the names of the people writing the code, and can you speak to them directly?
  5. Will you see working software on a staging environment regularly, not only near the end?
  6. Is there a warranty for defects, and is maintenance optional rather than required to keep the site online?
  7. Can they show live work, or walk you through the architecture of past projects with the engineers who built them?

For the full list with good answers and red flags, read 10 questions to ask a web development agency. To run the whole evaluation, with contract clauses and a weighted scorecard, see how to choose a software development company. Most of our case studies are anonymised for client confidentiality, so we offer architecture walk-throughs with the engineers who did the work; the AI Dev Planner platform is our own product, and you can use it yourself.

Web development agency vs freelancer vs in-house

When each hiring model tends to fit
OptionTends to fit whenWatch out for
FreelancerA small, well-defined website or one specific skillCover if they are unavailable; breadth of skills
Web development agencyA project needing design, front end, back end, testing and deployment togetherWho actually does the work; ownership of code and accounts
In-house teamThe product is core to the business and changes every week for yearsTime to hire, and managing engineers without technical leadership

These options are not exclusive: a company can build the first version and hand it to an in-house team, which is why we document everything for handover. Our agency vs freelancer vs in-house guide compares the three in detail.

FAQs about hiring a web development agency

How much does a web development agency charge in the UK?

It depends on whether you need a website or a web application. For websites, Clutch's pricing guide says agencies typically charge $2,000 to $100,000 and that most projects reviewed on its site cost under $10,000 (accessed 18 October 2026). Web applications cost more because they are software, not pages. Our published UK planning ranges are roughly £25,000–£45,000 for a SaaS or web app MVP, £40,000 to over £80,000 for internal tools, and £60,000 to over £120,000 for customer portals. We do not publish a fixed price for brochure websites; we quote in writing after a scoping conversation.

What is the difference between a web development company and a web development agency?

In practice, very little. Both terms describe a business that designs, builds and maintains websites or web applications for clients, and buyers use them interchangeably, along with web development firm. What matters is not the label but what they build, who does the work, what you own at the end and how the project is run. Some agencies lean towards marketing websites and design; some companies focus on web applications and software. Ask which one they are.

How long does a web development project take?

Our published timelines are 8–12 weeks for a focused SaaS MVP and 12–16 weeks for a standard operational web application MVP, from agreed scope to production release. Internal tools and customer portals are scheduled after discovery. Content-led websites depend mostly on how ready your content is and how quickly feedback comes back, so we agree the dates for your feedback rounds at the start.

Who owns the code when I hire a web development agency?

With us, you do. Once the final invoice is settled, full ownership of the source code, repository, environment configuration and deployment setup transfers to you, with no licensing lock-in. We recommend the repository, hosting, domain and third-party accounts live in your company's name from day one. With any company, make sure ownership is assigned in writing in the contract, because paying for the work does not on its own transfer copyright in the UK or the US.

Do you build simple brochure websites?

Our focus is web applications, SaaS products, portals, internal tools and AI features built on Next.js, TypeScript and PostgreSQL. For a content-led marketing site that non-developers need to edit, a website builder or WordPress may be the better choice, and we will tell you if it is. If you also need a marketing site alongside an application, we can connect a headless CMS or recommend keeping that site on a separate platform.

Do you have a UK office?

No. AI Dev Planner has no UK office, UK address or UK-based staff. Our engineering team is in Islamabad, Pakistan, and works remotely with UK businesses, as well as clients in the US, Europe and the Gulf. We say this up front because it changes how a project runs: less in-person contact than a local agency, and more reliance on a written scope, a shared Slack channel and scheduled video calls.

Can a remote web development agency work well with a UK business?

Yes, if the working model is agreed at the start. Islamabad is four hours ahead of the UK in summer and five in winter, because Pakistan does not change its clocks, so our working day overlaps with UK mornings and early afternoons. Each project gets a dedicated Slack channel with the engineers, a written scope before the build and a video walkthrough of working software every two weeks. A remote agency is probably not the right choice if you need a supplier on site in the UK regularly, or if your contracts or regulator require UK-based staff only.

Do you build e-commerce websites?

We build custom and headless e-commerce: catalogue and transaction APIs behind a fast Next.js storefront, with payments through Stripe, for shops with unusual pricing or ordering rules, B2B catalogues with customer-specific prices, or stores that must sync with an ERP or warehouse system. For a standard shop with a normal catalogue, a hosted e-commerce platform is usually cheaper to run, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a custom build.

What happens after my website or web application launches?

A 60–90 day warranty after launch covers defects in what we delivered. Hosting and ongoing maintenance sit outside the build price. A maintenance retainer can cover monitoring, security patches, dependency upgrades and performance work, and new features are scoped as separate phases. Because you own the code and documentation, you can move support to your own team or another supplier at any point.

Should I hire a web development company or a freelancer?

A freelancer can be a good fit for a small, well-defined website, or for a specific skill your team lacks. A web development company makes more sense when the project needs several skills at once, such as design, front end, back end, testing and deployment, or when you need cover if one person is unavailable. If the product is core to your business for years, building an in-house team may be right in the long run. Our agency vs freelancer vs in-house guide compares the three.
